University of British Columbia Scholarships 2020-2021

The University of British Columbia was established in 1908 by Tory, today the prestigious school is home to 9,000 students including 50,000 undergraduate and 10,000 graduate students. The University of British Columbia Scholarships is provided to international students on academic merit.

Newly admitted students reside at two campuses in the University of British Columbia with the main campus located at Point Grey, close to Vancouver and another located in Okanagan which houses numerous departments for many academic programs.

Two other campuses house Robeson Square and the Hospital. The Vancouver campus is larger than the Okanagan campus, accommodating over 85% of University of British Columbia students. In the last year, 23% of students at the Vancouver campus and about 13% at the Okanagan campus were international.

International Leader of Tomorrow Award and the Donald A. Wehrung International Student Award

The International Leader of Tomorrow Award and the Donald A. Wehrung International Student Award both offer scholarships proportional to the financial needs of the applicants which are determined by tuition fees and living expenses, minus financial contribution made by the applicant’s family annually.

A standard needs assessment is based on the financial information provided by the applicant’s family. The University of British Columbia basically assesses how much the applicant’s family can contribute towards their education while covering everything else.

The Donald A. Wehrung International Student Award is specifically targeted at international undergraduate students from impoverished or war-torn areas who have achieved academic excellence under such difficult circumstances.

Value of Awards:

Both scholarships cover tuition cost, student fees, living expenses and other related costs at the University of British Columbia, minus the financial contribution the student and their family can make annually towards these costs.

Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for an International Leader of Tomorrow Award, applicants must:

  • Be applying for their first undergraduate degree in any course
  • Be admissible to the first choice program they are applying to, including meeting the university’s English Language Admission Standard
  • Have an excellent academic record of at least an “A” average or equivalent standard
  • Be an international student, who is neither a Canadian citizen nor a permanent resident of Canada, and will be studying in Canada on a Canadian Study Permit (visa)
  • Demonstrate a level of financial need that would otherwise prevent them from pursuing a University of British Columbia degree
  • Be entering a University of British Columbia undergraduate degree program from a recognized high school, college or  university

Study Subject and Course Level:

This scholarship award is available for pursuing an undergraduate degree level for any of the courses offered at the University of British Columbia.

How to Apply

Scholarship candidates must be nominated by either the high school they’re currently attending/recently graduated from, or the college/university they’re transferring from.

Candidates are expected to apply for admission to an undergraduate programme at the University of British Columbia and get their high school or university (for transfer students) to nominate them using the forms on the University of British Columbia website.

Although applicants can specify two program choices in their application for admission, an International Leader of Tomorrow Award nomination will be considered about the nominee’s first choice program. To ensure an application decision can be made in time for nomination consideration, early application is encouraged.

Application Deadline:

To be considered for either scholarship, applicants must apply online for admission and submit an award application by December 1, 2019.

Outstanding International Student Award

The Outstanding International Student Award is a merit-based, one-time entrance scholarship awarded to highly qualified students once they are offered admission to the University of British Columbia. Students selected for this Scholarship show academic strength and display talented involvement outside of the classroom.

Applicants will be considered for this scholarship shortly after they receive an offer of admission to the university.  The university starts making its scholarship decisions in February.

Level of Study:

The Outstanding International Student Award is available for undergraduate students who intend to pursue their studies in Canada.

Host Nationality:

This scholarship is to be taken in Canada to study at the University of British Columbia.

Eligible Nationality:

The Outstanding International Student Award is available for only international students.
