A Little History About Turkey

Türkiye (Turkey) is a transcontinental country that is mainly located on the Anatolian peninsula in Western Asia but has a smaller portion that is located on the Balkan peninsula in Southeast Europe. It is a country that has cultural connections to ancient Greek, Roman, Ottoman empires, Byzantine and Persian.

Istanbul, which is cosmopolitan and on the Bosphorus Strait, is home to the iconic Hagia Sophia, with its Christian mosaics and soaring dome, the massive 17th-century Blue Mosque and the circa-1460 Topkapı Palace, former home of sultans.

The modern capital of Turkey is Ankara. Turkey’s major resorts are Antalya, a gateway to the southern Mediterranean area known as both the Turquoise Coast and the Turkish Riviera, and the Bodrum and Çesme peninsulas, both on the Aegean.

The remnants of Troy and Pergamon, the ancient city of Ephesus and Roman ruins at Hierapolis are some of Turkey’s archeological sites. The central region of Cappadocia is popularly known for the “fairy chimneys”, Bronze Age cave dwellings which became early Christian churches, the Derinkuyu and Kaymakli underground cities, while Pamukkale is popular for its travertine hot springs.

From the 2015-2016 academic year, the number of international students choosing to study in Turkey has significantly grown. There are around 650,000 foreign students currently in Turkey. This is one of the signals of the growing importance of the country as a higher education destination.
